In honor of International Refugee Day – Highlighting the systemic and current crises faced by the Yazidi community in Iraq and in Germany. As we talk about refugees we must acknowledge that the number of displaced people worldwide has doubled since 2015. Today over 122 million people worldwide are fleeing war and persecution.
Please join us for an in-depth presentation and discussion on the current situation that is facing Yazidis. Over the past year Wadi has worked with several partners to compile data on multiple crises that the Yazidi community is facing concurrently. The withdrawal of USAID and the collapse of international funding of projects that were supporting Yazidi’s with opportunities for economic improvement, education, food and medical aid; has resulted in a cascade of negative impacts at the most local level.
Wadi teams who have been working in and around the camps and Yazidi community at large for over 15 years have been documenting these recent realities and will be presenting these findings at this event. Human Network, an expert in health and medical affairs, will also be sharing their documentation of the realities of the health situation for Yazidi’s in and around the camps in the Dohuk area.
In early 2024 Wadi in cooperation with ProAsyl Germany published a landmark report about the stark realities of the Yazidi situation in Iraq – calling for an immediate end to deportations of Yazidis from Germany. The report highlighted the complicated security situation, the lack of reliable access to education, healthcare and financial opportunities as well as the ongoing biases and bigotry that Yazidis face in every aspect of life.
Not only that but at that time there was a real feeling of being left alone by the international community that had promised them their support, and in 2025 the massive withdrawal of international aid, and the collapse of funding for basics it seems they truly have been abandoned.
At the moment out of 16 camps only 6 have open health care centers, providing only the most basic of care. Access to education, clean water and other basic services continues to be difficult. Moreover Yazidis who sought refuge in Europe, mainly Germany, are still being deported back to Iraq. The current situation is putting thousands of lives at risk. Please join us as we share these findings and come together as the Active Citizenship Network to support the Yazidi Community on World Refugee Day.
We cordially invite journalists, media representatives, human rights defenders, policymakers, and concerned citizens to attend a critical press conference focused on the current humanitarian and justice challenges facing Yazidi survivors—eleven years after the genocide.
