Awareness seminars about reproductive health

In our ongoing commitment to combat Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Kurdistan, we have made significant progress. Our teams have diligently gathered crucial questions and issues related to women’s health, particularly focusing on those affected by FGM. This new approach highlights the imperative need to prioritize women’s health, with a special emphasis on reproductive health. Understanding the extensive physical and psychological damage caused by FGM is a critical step in addressing this harmful practice.

Our recent seminars, attended by thousands of women, have shed light on several key issues. One notable finding is the lack of awareness regarding the existing law that bans FGM and more so the Law no.8 of Combating Domestic Violence. However, an even more concerning issue is the general lack of knowledge about reproductive health among both cut and uncut women. This knowledge gap is compounded by the fact that many women feel uncomfortable or ashamed to discuss topics related to sex or sexuality with their healthcare providers. Additionally, some women have reported that their doctors often do not provide enough time to address all their health-related questions and concerns.

Addressing these gaps requires a multifaceted approach. Strengthening the capacity of local female professionals, including social workers, lawyers, and psychologists, is vital. These professionals are on the front lines, directly interacting with women affected by FGM and other related health issues. To this end, our new project, supported by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany through the General Consulate in Erbil, will provide our teams with in-depth training on reproductive health from leading experts in the field. These comprehensive training sessions aim to enhance the quality and depth of our seminars on health and FGM.

The purpose of these trainings is twofold: firstly, to empower women with the knowledge they need to understand their bodies and health better, and secondly, to equip our teams to serve as effective mediators. By acting as intermediaries, our teams will convey the voices and concerns of women from rural areas to the experts and ensure that these women receive the information and support they need. This initiative will serve as a crucial starting point for women to learn more about their bodies and health, ultimately fostering a more informed and empowered community.

Moreover, these efforts will help break down the barriers that prevent women from seeking the information and care they need.

By creating a supportive environment where women feel comfortable discussing their health issues, we aim to reduce the stigma and shame associated with topics of sexuality and reproductive health.

This, in turn, will lead to better health outcomes and a greater sense of autonomy and empowerment among women in Kurdistan.

In conclusion, our continued focus on combating FGM and promoting women’s health in Kurdistan is making a tangible difference.

Through education, empowerment, and community engagement, we are working towards a future where all women have the knowledge and support, they need to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

Our partnership with the Federal Foreign Office of Germany and the training provided to our teams are crucial steps in this journey. We remain committed to listening to and amplifying the voices of women, ensuring they receive the care and information they deserve.

Please support our ongoing efforts to combat FGM in Kurdistan and Iraq.
